The digital nomad visa in Indonesia is officially the remote worker visa: visa code E33G, in Indonesian the Visa Rumah Kedua Pekerja Jarak Jauh. It lets a foreigner employed by a company abroad live here and carry on that job. At October 2026, you need an employment contract with a company outside Indonesia and an income of at least US$60,000 a year, and the first stay permit runs for up to one year. The rules are in the Minister of Law and Human Rights regulation on visas and stay permits, Permenkumham 22/2023, as amended by Permenkumham 11/2024.

What the remote worker visa (E33G) is

E33G sits among the second-home categories of the regulation (Article 33(2)(j)(5)), not among the expert and worker categories (Article 33(2)(a) and (b)). That matters: the application for those categories carries the employer’s proof of sponsorship and a statement from the manpower authority (Article 34), while the E33G application is made by the foreigner under its own article (Article 63).

The Directorate General’s visa list does not mark E33G as a golden visa, and its requirements include an income test and an employment contract, not the investment amounts in our golden visa guide. Where E33G sits among the other codes is set out in our guide to Indonesia visa categories.

Who can get the digital nomad visa in Indonesia

Employed abroad

You hold an employment contract with a company that is a legal entity outside Indonesia (Article 63(3)).

US$60,000 a year

Your salary or income is at least US$60,000 a year, which stands as your immigration guarantee (Article 63(2)). The Director General may change the figure.

You apply yourself

You apply in your own name, without an Indonesian sponsor (Article 63(1)).

Employed, not freelance

The regulation asks for an employment contract with a legal entity outside Indonesia, so someone with clients rather than an employer would not have that contract. If you are part employee, part contractor, we look at your position with you before anything is filed.

We prepare the application with you and tell you which documents to gather. Your employment contract and proof of your income are among them.

How long it lasts

The first stay permit runs for up to one year (Article 105(10)(e)), and the regulation allows a limited stay permit to be extended (Article 112(1)). Our experience is that the remote worker permit is extended once, for a second year, so two years in total.

What it covers, and what it does not

What the remote worker visa covers (Decision M.IP-08.GR.01.01/2025, Lampiran, E33G)
On E33G
Employer’s work Yes
Travel, tourism Yes, in and out on a re-entry permit
Family Yes, under the immigration rules
Local clients Not covered: a different permit or an added activity is needed
Selling No
Other work Only after an application for an added activity

In short, the only work the visa covers is the work you do for your employer abroad. Work for Indonesian clients is outside it, and would need a different permit or an application for an added activity, for example a work permit and KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, the limited stay permit) with an Indonesian sponsor. We can advise on the right one.

Tax while you live here

Indonesian tax residence turns on three tests in the income tax law (Undang-Undang Pajak Penghasilan, UU PPh, Article 2(3)(a), as substituted by Law (Undang-Undang) 6/2023), which our article on the annual personal tax return sets out.

Check your tax position before you arrive

Which of the three tests you meet depends on where you live, how long you are here and whether you intend to live here. Our personal tax team can check your position before you arrive.

Next step: applying for the E33G

Three things are worth settling early: that your contract is with a foreign legal entity, that your work stays with that employer, and where you stand on tax. We prepare the E33G application as part of our family and social visas service. Tell us your employer’s country and your planned arrival date, and we will confirm whether E33G fits.

Planning to work from Indonesia for a year?

Tell us who employs you and when you plan to arrive. We handle the E33G application with you, and can look at your tax position before you travel.
